Running Doom on a TI-84/83 Calculator - A Guide

Running Doom on a TI-84/83 Calculator

Hello there! Today I am writing this post as an exploration into the unknown: running a video game on a computer that hasn't been updated in the last 10 years. Of course, we cant run Crysis at the highest settings, but we can fortunately run doom pretty easily.

Requirements
-TI-84/83 Calculator
-15 Minutes
-A Micro USB Type B Connector

Why?
You might be wondering "Lohannes, why wouldnt you just emulate this on a RPi Zero W" or "Why would you even?" To that I say, why not? I already dropped $120 on the biggest scam since printers existed so why wouldn't I try to get my money's worth?

How?
This is the fun part. First, you will need to connect your shiny new calculator from 2004 to your computer using the included USB Mini Type-B connector. After that, you will need to install the TI Connect Software. This is what you will use to install programs and apps onto your calculator. For this tutorial we will need a new operating System called MirageOS

After that is done downloading, unzip the file. After unzipping, right click on MirageOS.8xk and select Send To Ti Device. Once in this screen, be sure that MirageOS transfers to Archive. Boot up your TI-84 and make sure that pressing Apps brings up MirageOS in the menu. After you have confirmed that MirageOS is installed, you are ready to install doom.

To install doom, you will want to get the file from here. You need to again unzip the file. After done unzipping, right click DOOM.8XP and select Send to TI Device. Be sure that the file is transferring to archive, not ram. Launch up your TI-84 Plus (after it is done, the device will brick if you launch it too early) and navigate to Apps -> MirageOS -> Main -> Doom. And then BOOM! Click Doom and it will launch up a tuned down version of doom. You shoot by pressing the 2nd button and move by pressing the D-Pads.

Problems
When I first installed Doom on my calculator, I ran into this issue where the calculator would freeze once you clicked play. This is remedied by removing doom and replacing it.

Thanks as always for reading, and happy calculator gaming!
